Henry Lester

Bren Professor of Biology

Researchers in Henry Lester's group work on ion channels, receptors, and transporters, generating insights into nicotine addiction, neurodegenerative disease, and epilepsy. Lester's group has worked to understand nicotine addiction by repeatedly exposing nerve cells to the drug and studying the effects. Initially intrigued by the surprising statistic that a long-term tobacco user has a roughly twofold lower chance of developing Parkinson's disease, Lester also has led pioneering investigations into nicotine's effects on neural disorders, and is revealing parallels between the pharmacology of nicotinic and psychiatric drugs.
